Why do you see African-american directed clothes sell for so cheap at closeout stores?

discount baby clothes

Someone’s question made me reckon about this. I can go to stores like TJ Maxx and Marshall and see racks and racks of Phat Farm, Baby Phat, Fubu, Marc Ecko, Sean John, Apple Bottoms, etc. clothing for dirt cheap. These clothes all have rather pricey stickers out of the factory. Why do all these black inspired, focused, what have you clothing bottom out and end up in these discount clothing stores in masses. In the same stores you can find $65.00 Ralph Lauren polos sell for $30.00, and then see a $100.00 (no joke) Baby Phat purse sell for $10.00
sorry, I am also black, not a white Redneck as my screen name and avatar suggest. I am using my roomates account

They figure if they sell them for $10 instead of $30, then no one will steal them off the racks.

Well, I’m Black (mostly), and I don’t buy all that crap, no matter what it costs. Walmart and thrift stores do it for me! lol

I agree.
its confusing.

Well Ralph Lauren is a brand that is very ancient and established. It has a history of being a quality brand. Maybe some of the other brands don’t have the kind of history that lends value to a product. Also I reckon that the association with hip hop ar gangsta rap cheapens a product. I mean, urban kids and wanna be gangstas might find those brands desirable but most other people might not.

The answer is that the fashion is small lived, unfortunately in the inner cities, when many people have the same clothes people want something unique so they start a new trend while the manufactures have thought they struck gold with what they have, Not so, then they need to recover something from their investment so they, [the manufactures] can use that recovered money to follow the “new” trend.

its all about demand…..
more people wear Ralph Lauren or Ralph Lauren like clothes on a daily basis than Phat Farm and Baby Phat, Fubu, Ecko and apple bottoms and sean john

and even if its not on a daily basis who doesn’t need the classic Ralph Lauren like clothes for and outfit or three in there closet

You’re just speculating. I have bought so called “white clothing” like a Ralph Lauren shirt at Marshall’s for $15. I’ve also bought a Kenneth Cole bag for $40 when they usually cost over $300. Stores like Marshall’s and T.J. Maxx are there to sell clothes for cheaper prices. Maybe you just don’t know how to be a excellent bargain shopper.
